What is Yoga

What is Yoga?
Yoga literally means, "yoke", coming from the Sanskrit word “yuj”. Philosophically, it means "union", unifying all parts of oneself. Yoga is a union of opposites, such as the active and receptive parts of ourselves, or the Yin and Yang. In yoga we practice bringing all of the aspects of body, mind and spirit to a place of oneness, harmony and balance. From this place of oneness, we find that our whole life can be transformed. For what we are within radiates outward to all areas of our life.

Hatha YogaHatha Yoga
Hatha Yoga is a system of postures (Asanas) and breathing practices (Pranayama). There are many styles of Hatha Yoga, each of which arises from different teaching lineages. As each of our teachers comes from a different yoga background, their classes will vary in style and content. All yoga classes include asanas, breathing, and relaxation techniques

Benefits of YogaBenefits of Yoga
The regular practice of yoga has many therapeutic effects, in addition to its central purpose of balancing body, mind and spirit. On a physical level, it increases flexibility and strength, improves circulation, reduces stress, eases chronic pain symptoms, realigns the spine and improves posture, immune function, and stamina.

Yoga BasicsYoga Basics
  • Choose a class level that is appropriate for you now. (If you aren’t sure what level is right for you, try a lower level class first and then check with the instructor about what might best serve your needs. It’s better to start gently and then move up only when your body is ready.)
  • It is ideal to do yoga on an empty stomach.
  • Wear clean comfortable, stretchable clothing without zippers or buttons on the front.
  • Be sure to let your instructor know of any medications or conditions that might affect your practice. (The instructor may be able to give you safe alternatives or helpful suggestions to make the practice safe and therapeutic for you.)

Yoga EtiquetteYoga Etiquette
Please help keep Four Winds Yoga a sanctuary of peace by observing the following:
  • Turn off cell phones or pagers, or leave them in your car.
  • Refrain from wearing perfume or cologne to class.
  • Arrive a few minutes early.
  • If you arrive late and meditation is going on, enter the room quietly and sit down immediately near the door (without finding a space for your mat), until meditation is over. Then, a space will be made for you.
  • Please do not leave the classroom during meditation or savasana (final relaxation).
  • Please put away your props neatly. Thank YOU!
