Message From Executive Director Sue Sherman
February 2010
Dear Friends: The Tamarack Wellness Center was a dream of mine that became a reality in May 2003. During the past seven years I have seen Tamarack grow in reputation and as a community center. This is primarily because of the benefits we provide to our users. I see smiles on people’s faces, states of bliss and relaxation as people enjoy the 92-degree pool, yoga classes, fitness program, community gathering spaces and our peaceful environment. Tamarack touches the lives of thousands in our community and provides a place where bodies become strong, pain is reduced, minds are expanded, and the gift of peace is offered to each person walking through our doors.
Tamarack is now in a state of transition. While the timeline is not set, within the next two years I will be leaving my position and a new Executive Director will be hired to fulfill the duties I have voluntarily performed for the Center. I have been proud to not only donate my time but also to provide the financial backing that the Tamarack Center has needed to operate. However, it is time for me to move into another phase of my life.
Tamarack has incredibly talented instructors and committed staff and a wide diversity of programs and classes targeted to all ages and fitness levels. But what we have that is truly unique and unmatched in Lane County is our 92-degree salt water pool and our scholarship programs. Because we are a fully tax-deductible non-profit organization, our aquatics, yoga and fitness scholarship programs are able to benefit many Lane County residents. Recipients of these scholarships include cancer survivors; disabled men, women and children, some of whom would be unable to move or exercise were it not for the warm, healing water of the pool; families without means, who, because of our scholarship programs, are able to come together and enjoy the many programs at Tamarack. You recently received our annual request for donations. That request was sent with a deep sense of urgency. Our staff has worked diligently to keep costs down wherever possible and stretch each dollar to the maximum. However, without the financial cushion I have previously been able to provide, coupled with the additional costs of hiring an Executive Director, we are facing a major deficit in the very near future. Our Board of Directors is researching other sources of revenue to help remedy this situation. In the long run, however, it will be people like you who come here, attend our classes, swim in our pool, work out in our fitness room, go to our workshops and who understand the gift of Tamarack in the community who will keep it alive. It is to you that I am making this request for support. While it started as a dream of mine it has become a reality for you. Please help in any way you can by making generous donations; telling your friends and family about Tamarack’s programs; and/or sharing information about sources of support or local businesses who could partner with us to continue the dream. I invite you to call me at (541) 683-7506 to discuss any ideas that you may have which could benefit the future of Tamarack Wellness Center. Additionally, I encourage you to take the opportunity to share this appeal letter with your friends and clients. We have additional copies in the office. With all of us working together, this community resource will continue to flourish.
With Gratitude, Sue Sherman
