NIA Technique Classes, Summer 2009 Schedule NIA Technique Classes, Summer 2009 Schedule
We are not currently offering NIA For Self Healing.

Monday 4:30PM: Classic NIA
NIA for Self Healing is 30 minutes of the 5 Stages class & 25 minutes of Classic NIA dance. This class is designed for those wanting to access their "inner healer" and renew their relationship with their body. The beauty of NIA is its ability to initiate healing within the body and its adaptability to all levels of fitness. The Nia 5 Stages Class The Nia 5 Stages class is an integrative practice based on the five stages of human development: embryonic, creeping, crawling, standing, and walking. Practiced with awareness, these stages have the power to facilitate optimal alignment, improved function and comfort in the body. Whether practiced at length or for as little as five minutes a day, this system provides a tool for reclaiming and sustaining mobility, flexibility, strength, agility and stability. This practice organically realigns the body in such a way that after just one practice, participants notice improvements in range of motion, power, ease and grace. Class is designed to be a meditative somatic learning experience teaching you how to blend Your Body's Way (your current state of fitness & alignment) with The Body's Way (optimal state of health & function). Through personal exploration, you will learn to lovingly guide and make choices based on seeking pleasure, not pain. Personal kneepads are required.

Wednesday 4:15PM: Gentle NIA
Nia is a non-impact, barefoot exercise technique for all ages and abilities. It combines influences from dance arts, martial arts and healing arts with an emphasis on moving comfortably and joyfully "your body's way." The benefits are myriad, including joy (emotional well-being), trunk and spine flexibility, improved balance, cardiovascular conditioning, leg strength, using up excess calories, improved posture, understanding how to move without hurting yourself, and experiencing the connection between your mind and your body.

Instructor Janet Hollander applies her  experience as a gerontologist to facilitate participants of any age to find a way to enjoy moving without pain or injury and to emphasize what we can do.

Friday 4:30PM: Classic NIA with World Music
“Nia is movement-medicine for the body and soul.”

Classic NIA--Neuromuscular Integrative Action-- is choreographed dance routines that address the whole person by using a comprehensive, holistic exercise approach designed with a combination of nine classic movement forms.
Nia Blends:
Martial Arts: T’ai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido
Dance Arts: Jazz Dance, Modern Dance, Duncan Dance
Healing Arts: Yoga, Alexander Technique, The Teachings of Moshe Feldenkrais

Nia simultaneously addresses the body, mind, emotions, and spirit, and puts them on the “same page” using music, movement and personal expression to integrate one’s neurology (including the mind, emotions, and spirit) with one’s outer body, or musculature.

Nia teaches you how to physically interpret and internally direct your actions and choices, and to listen to the voice of your body and allow the body to be your guide in discovering Dynamic Ease. Practiced barefoot to music, Nia is self-guided, adaptable and safe for any ability and fitness level.  Delivering cardiovascular, whole-body conditioning, Nia is based on creating a loving relationship with the body and following The Body’s Way – the innate intelligence of the body.

Saturday 7:45 - 9:00AM: Aqua NIA
Aqua NIA uses inspiring music, diverse rhythms and the nine Classic movement forms to deliver a fun, safe, creative, work out. Adaptable and safe for any ability and fitness level, Aqua NIA allows participants to guide their own practice through awareness of sensation, intention & modification.
In addition to all the benefits of NIA, Aqua NIA offers:
• Anonymity and privacy during workouts: no one is directly watching what is going on beneath the water.
• Increased ability to focus on JOY, rather than “getting it right.”
• Zero impact for those with physical restrictions; making dance possible for some who can’t dance on land.
• Improved mobility & excellent strength training
• A blissful workout in 92 degree salt water

The Golden Ribbon Foundation Partnership The Golden Ribbon Foundation Partnership
When Arlie & Company President Suzanne Arlie underwent treatment for ovarian cancer, she explored many non-traditional treatments and practices to improve her health and well being – including a meditation technique in which she envisioned a golden ribbon winding through all her choices, guiding her down the right path. By creating the Golden Ribbon Foundation (GRF), Suzanne hopes to improve the quality of life for other women traveling this difficult road. The GRF provides $1,000 grants for complementary treatments and supportive care services to any woman in Lane County, regardless of financial status, who has been diagnosed with ovarian cancer and is under a physician’s care for the disease. Through a unique partnership with Tamarack Wellness Center, GRF grant recipients have access to a wide variety of beneficial treatments including massage, acupuncture, nutritional counseling, movement therapy and mind/body workshops.
